HOW FRONTLINESMS WORKS.
Once you’ve requested FrontlineSMS and downloaded the software, installation is quick and simple. You’ll be up and running in no time.
When FrontlineSMS is opened, the first screen is the ContactManager. It’s a place to create groups, and add members and contact information to those groups.
Each group is identified by a name—in this case, “Product Tour.” Once a group is created, its name will appear in the Groups window.
Each group consists of members. Add members’ names and phone numbers, as well as other useful information such as email addresses, alternate contact numbers, or notes.
To send a message to the members of a group, use the SendConsole. Then select the group from the Message Recipient window on the left.
Once you’ve selected a group, compose your message in the field provided. Then select the type of phone you want to send it with, and click on the Send Message button.
FrontlineSMS also receives messages, making it possible to conduct surveys, solicit opinions, or run competitions. First create a keyword with the SurveyManager. Any incoming messages that begin with the keyword will be identified as part of the program—in this case, a competition.
Next, announce the competition by sending a message through FrontlineSMS, or by promoting it though other channels such as newsletters or websites. When participants send in their entries, they will appear in the ReceiveConsole.
View responses to surveys or competitions with the SurveyAnalyst. Entries identified by keyword appear in the left window. If there were other competitions or surveys running, they would also appear in this window.
At any time, entries can be exported as separate files and viewed in Microsoft Word, Excel, or other programs. Once they’ve been exported, they can be emailed, sorted, or formatted to suit your needs. This is especially helpful when conducting a survey.
Automatic replies can be sent using the ReplyManager. This feature also uses keywords. When anyone texts a message containing a keyword, a reply message is sent automatically. This feature is useful for providing information such as clinic opening times, health tips, or market prices.
The MessageTracker keeps track of all messages successfully sent and received, as well as failed and pending messages. A pending message could mean that a phone has been disconnected or has run out of credit.
The PhoneManager searches for phones and modems on your computer and sets them up. Devices can either send messages or just receive them. Read messages can be automatically deleted. And for urgent messages, delivery confirmations can be displayed.
You’ve seen how FrontlineSMS works. It’s simple, and easy to use, but the value of any tool is in how it is used. Around the world, FrontlineSMS is used to empower people in hundreds of different ways. How will you use it?
